Welcome to the Dollhouse, a mysterious facility which houses Dolls, aka Actives. The Actives are volunteers who’ve signed a five year contract and undergone a procedure which effectively wipes all of their memories, returning them to a child-like state.
The Dollhouse in LA is headed by Adelle DeWitt, the British ice queen who oversees all engagements. Topher Brink is the main programmer who imprints and monitors the Actives, and an Active known simply as Echo has proved to be an interesting case; Echo seems to be regaining memories from her past life which poses a problem to the organization and may get her sent to the mysterious and ominous “attic.”
The Dollhouse is a strange business, dealing in fantasy. The wealthy purchase the services of the Actives, who have personalities implanted so they can take on whichever persona best fits the client’s “engagement;” the perfect lover, a ruthless assassin, the world’s most cunning thief. Whatever the situation calls for, the Actives are adapted to handle it and once the engagement is complete, their memories are wiped once again and they return to the Dollhouse.
There is much ambiguity surrounding the Dollhouse. No one outside of those involved with the organization know anything about it, other than the street myth. The FBI has been trying to confirm the existence of the Dollhouse for some time now and it would appear that they are getting closer, thanks to the efforts of FBI agent Paul Ballard, who has become obsessed with exposing the Dollhouse and more importantly, finding Caroline.
